Is it an alternator replacement common?

As the alternator is the sole device on a vehicle that charges your battery, any failure in performing that role will result in the battery power being diminished and as a result, will inevitably end with a “flat” battery. As the power reduced, certain electrical circuits will shut down, some of which are critical to the safety of the vehicle such as the ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) and power steering if electrically operated.

Eventually, the vehicle will no longer have the power to keep the engine’s electrics running and the motor will stop – and you will not be able to re-start it either until the battery is charged. With modern alternators, there is little to be gained in overhauling one. The individual parts are often hard to come by and the labor time required is so high that it much better to simply replace them.

What is a car starter motor and how it works?

A starter motor is a small electric motor connected to the flywheel of the engine. Its purpose is to start the engine. In order to start a car engine, you need to rotate the crankshaft at the speed of approximately 200rpm, this task is carried out by a starter motor. The starter motor operates at 12v when you turn your car key to start position the circuit completes and the motor gets the required voltage to turn the flywheel over which in turn starts your car’s engine.

Some symptoms of failing or a faulty starter motor

• When the engine does not start after turning the key to start position.
• When the starter motor starts making an unusual noise
• When there is a clicking noise from the starter motor
• Smoke comes out from the starter motor
• The starter motor turns too slowly and the engine takes a longer time to start than normal
